Mozambeach

Today at SBC: Last day to add a 2nd quarter class. That means: it’s about midterms time.

.

Today in South Africa: I finished my semester. Finished! No more papers. No more internships.  Classes ended on Friday and exams started Monday morning. From now until Nov. 15th the campus will slowly get more and more quiet as students study, pack, and head home for summer vacation.

.

South African students pack to go home to their families and normal lives. But for us International Students its a cutting of the academic chains that held us here in this quaint, tiny little town so we’re free to explore the wild mysterious veld of a country.

.

This time Friday: Mozambique! Some of my fellow Americans and I are hoping a plane, a train and then a bus to the beaches of Mozambique. We’re going to the capital city of Maputo for a night and then driving to the shore to enjoy the beach, snorkeling, kayaking, and the historic town of Inhabane.

This is going to be interesting because it’s ‘real’ Africa. We have to take malaria medication, boil our drinking water, peel fruit before we eat it, and be careful of the meat we eat. No more paved roads. No more ATMs. No more English. Yep, time to brush up on my Portugese.

The main piece of our itinerary is to lay on the beach and just enjoy ‘warm’ before we fly back to the States, but even the experience of living in our little bungalows and shopping for food and such at the market will be quite an experience.
